4th Synthesis in Drug Discovery and Development
EFMC Sponsored Event
Virtual Event
Synthesis is at the heart of drug discovery and development. The industry has increasingly demanded higher quality clinical candidates and has sought to exploit less druggable biological targets. Densely functionalised small molecules with a high degree of synthetic complexity are often the result of these demands. Successful programmes therefore require the application of innovative synthesis in all stages of discovery and development. The medicinal chemist’s toolbox is also enhanced by the introduction of novel bioisosteres, often made available only through the application of new synthetic methods. This symposium aims to celebrate the crucial role of synthesis in the success of drug discovery and development.

2nd Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry Europe Conference (EWOC)
Birmingham, United Kingdom
This event is aimed at enabling networking with industry, academia and women at different career stages, scientific presentations and motivational workshops on themes relevant to women and allies undertaking a career in Organic Chemistry.
Following the success of a US event ‘Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry’ EWOC, which first took place 2019, a group of scientists in Europe decided to organise a similar initiative as a ‘sister’ event, which was held at the Manchester Conference Centre in June 2023.
Recent data and publications show a persistent lack of women pursuing and maintaining careers in Organic Chemistry. Evidence indicates that providing an opportunity for women to meet, network, and share scientific and career strategies is one effective approach to encourage women to enter and maintain careers in science.
This is a not-for-profit event, supported through sponsorship and industrial registration fees.
- Registration is FREE to any chemist studying towards a PhD in Chemistry at a European University
- Academic Postdoctoral researchers can register FREE if they present a poster.
However, places are limited, so you are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. - Academic Postdoctoral researchers not presenting a poster will be charged £50 (+ vat) registration fee.
If you are able to pay the registration fee, this will enable more students / academics to present a poster and attend without charge – thank you. - Industrial Participants / Academic Faculty members will be charged £195 (+ vat) (Early bird £175 before March 10th)
- Male participants are welcome to submit a poster – please contact us

43rd Advanced Course of Medicinal Chemistry and Seminar for PhD students (ESMEC 2024)
EFMC Certified School
Urbino, Italy
The mission of the ESMEC is to provide participants, PhD students and junior researchers from both academia and industry, with the most recent advances in the field of medicinal and organic chemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology and analytical/ structural chemistry. This idea is aimed to reflect the current scenario of medicinal chemistry being a truly transdisciplinary approach, where the advances in knowledge are driven by the medicinal chemist’s ability to translate into new molecular concepts and into novel molecular entities the amount of information created by molecular medicine, pharmacology, molecular biology, systems biology.
For these reasons, the School is directed to participants at a graduated and post-graduated level, in chemistry but also in pharmacology or biology, who are keen to explore the interdisciplinary context of current cutting-edge research in medicinal chemistry.
To achieve these very ambitious goals, the School is organized into thematic sessions, each of them constructed around a series of lectures, followed by practical workshops.
This Year the Scientific Programme includes the following topics:
- Make it Unbreakable! Covalent Approach in Drug Discovery
- Click-and-Tag: How Bioorthogonal Chemistry is Transforming Drug Discovery
- Unusual Elements and Functional Groups Shaping the Future of Medicinal Chemistry
- Market Watch: New Drug Approval in 2023 and Synthetic Strategies
